That Township Flava!!

D.U.T's 2011 Graphic Design class recently pulled out all the stops for our upcoming
annual exhibition (15th Nov). The "township flava" theme for this years event made
for a really interesting set of promotional posters, shot in the heart of Durban's CBD
by the amazing Paul Reichle and the G.D kids of 2011. Playing on the stereotypical
rolls of people in the township scene, getting the actual class members in character
and other members busy with styling and set work, produced a really unique and
authentically local image for our posters.

This was really an awesome project to work on, with such an awesome group of
creative individuals. Big thanx to everybody that was involved and made it what it is.

Self - Promotion

My main objective when working on my self-promo project was to create a visually interesting image,
but at the same time have a reasonably direct concept. I decided to make a list of characteristics
that I felt made me a unique designer: Logical, Conceptual, Neat, Passionate and Unafraid
are the adjectives which I felt described me well.
When conducting research I came upon a quote which reads:
“ the mediator between the head and the hand is the heart.”
I felt this quote suited me as a designer and that it would be the inspiration of my self branding.
I then came up with the slogan “design fuelled by passion”, which would appear on all my self
branding items.

Corporate Identity

Seeing that the main aspect of my design ethic focuses on passion, I had to find a way to convey
that in my corporate identity. I decided that a unique way to portray passion was the vision of
a heart on an x-ray. I altered the appearance of the heart in order to bring more attention to it
and therefore, make the concept stronger.
I would print all the components on transparency medium and have everything appear like
an actual x - ray.

The Braai Book

COOKBOOK DESIGN

I recently worked on a brief which required me to design a South African
themed cookbook. I based the idea of the book on the braai culture in S.A.
All the chosen recipes, including dessert would be produced on an actual
braai stand or grill.

The cookbook project gave me the opportunity to use unconventional layout
dimensions for the book size. This resulted in the cookbook having a more
unique look when placed on the shelf. For my cookbook I wanted to keep the
layout relatively simple, and by doing so hoped to achieve a more
contemporary look.
I decided to allocate a page for the recipe layout and the adjacent page for
photography. All the meals were prepared and shot by me :)

K:3D

Im a huge fan of birthdays, whether it be my own or any close family and
friends. What better gift to give my best friend than his own shoot. The
following pics are part of that very gift, and gave me the opportunity to shoot
creatively how I saw fit. Centered around editorial fashion, I decided to
experiment with layout and photo manipulation..."best gift by far" he says.

Big Smiles Everyone!

So I've got a pretty amazing bunch of friends (extra points awarded as they are all
really inspiring creatives). During our daily Facebook stalking session (oh come now
you know everybody does it) we realized our profile pictures needed a long over due
revamp. The result was a really fun set of photos that totally showcased everyones
individual awesomeness :)

DING BATS FROM BEHIND BARS

The inspiration for my font came to me the same afternoon the brief was
handed out. A school colleague of mine was arrested for possession, he
served his time and was released back into society where he now works
as a gas attendant at our local Engen garage. When talking to him I noticed
his body covered in a few tattoos.
I decided that this would be my core concept for my typeface. From this I
would formulate a script from the style of prison tattooing . During my
research I discovered that there was no consistent style in which inmates
tattooed letter scripting . Therefore, I decided to produce a dingbat font of
common images that gang members in prison tattooed on each other.

Jo

I decided it was time to beef up my portfolio with more personal projects, and in doing so
showcase more of my creative strengths. I consider photography to be a major influence
and contributing factor to my on going development as a designer.
The following editorial photography series was inspired by the modern trend of
androgyny in fashion mainstream as well as the debut of Lady Gaga's alter ego Jo Calderone
at the MTV VMA Awards 2011 .
