20 Second Animation

Project: CONE (Conserve Our Natural Environment) 2011  Ernest van der Merwe. Project: CONE primarily deals with issues relating to our natural environment and how mankind can conserve and protect it for future generations.

The following issues are of concern:
1. Global warming
2. The loss of bio diversity (habitat and species)
3. Alternative energy sources (solar, wind and ocean power, etc)
4. Overpopulation

I was required to choose one of the issues above and design, illustrate and conceptualize a 20-second animation that will capture the attention of the specific target market that watches the TV channels concerned: MTV (321), Channel O (320), VH1 (323), MTV Base (322) and MK (324) (see DSTV Channels). The animations may be weird, surreal, amusing or series in nature as long as it deals with the issues stated above.

Editorial Illustration

RUGGED MAGAZINE

For the following project I’ve chosen to produce my editorial illustration
for Rugged Magazine
Rugged is a German based publication which focuses on the evolving
form of street culture, branching out into art, music, photography and
people. The magazine has a generally heavy illustrative style for many
of its main features and articles. There is also a moderate use of
photographic material used through out the magazine. The design and
layout aspects are modern and often have an offset fell about them as
they challenge and break the rules of conventional editorial layout and
placement.

Packaging and Design

5-Pack Doughnut Pack
Bread Ahead

For the following packaging component of the project
I chose Bread Ahead, a Durban based franchise
specialising in baked goods and products ranging from
cakes and desserts to breads and pies. I feel the franchise
have a fairly modern look and feel, as far as their
branding is concerned. My packaging idea for the
5-Pack doughnut pack would therefore be easily
incorporated as it has a similar simplistic and fresh look.
The 5-pack doughnut pack which i have designed
is modern and simplistic approch to problem and
houses five doughtnuts stacked ver ticaly.
The pack is something i like to call a “bag box”,
the doughnut housing section of the pack is a
simple box construction which, once at the measured
height, is scored and folded to form a handle componet
by which the pack is held and mobilised.
Due to this re-invention on a simple box pack for the
doughnut products it remains visually simple and interesting,
but functional as well .

doughnut shape.
